Extremophiles and biotechnology: current uses and prospects [version 1; referees: 2 approved]

چکیده
Biotechnology has almost unlimited potential to change our lives in very exciting ways. Many of the chemical reactions that produce these products can be fully optimized by performing them at extremes of temperature, pressure, salinity, and pH for efficient and cost-effective outcomes. Fortunately, there are many organisms (extremophiles) that thrive in extreme environments found in nature and offer an excellent source of replacement enzymes in lieu of mesophilic ones currently used in these processes. In this review, I discuss the current uses and some potential new applications of extremophiles and their products, including enzymes, in biotechnology. James A. متن کاملNew opportunities revealed by biotechnological explorations of extremophiles.
Over the past few decades the extremes at which life thrives has continued to challenge our understanding of biochemistry, biology and evolution. As more new extremophiles are brought into laboratory culture, they have provided a multitude of potential applications for biotechnology. More recently, innovative culturing approaches, environmental genome sequencing and whole genome sequencing have...
متن کاملCurrent status and future prospects for enabling chemistry technology in the drug discovery process [version 1; referees: 2 approved]
This review covers recent advances in the implementation of enabling chemistry technologies into the drug discovery process. Areas covered include parallel synthesis chemistry, high-throughput experimentation, automated synthesis and purification methods, flow chemistry methodology including photochemistry, electrochemistry, and the handling of “dangerous” reagents. Also featured are advances i...
متن کاملChemoprevention of cancer: current evidence and future prospects [version 1; referees: 3 approved]
Cancer chemoprevention refers to the use of agents for the inhibition, delay, or reversal of carcinogenesis before invasion. In the present review, agents examined in the context of cancer chemoprevention are classified in four major categories—hormonal, medications, diet-related agents, and vaccines—and the main representatives of each category are presented. Although there are serious constra...
متن کاملAdvances in understanding and managing atopic dermatitis [version 1; referees: 2 approved]
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, pruritic skin disease characterized by an improperly functioning skin barrier and immune dysregulation. We review proposed atopic dermatitis pathomechanisms, emphasizing how these impact current perspectives on natural history, role of allergic sensitization, and future therapeutic targets. 1
